No Visible Chest Movement

If there has been NO chest movement detected then

  • Check positioning and adjust if required
  • Get assistance from a colleague for two-person airway support
  • Use i-Gel or Tracheal Tube
  • Repeat 5 Inflation Breaths

Inserting an I-Gel

iGel Laryngeal Mask Airway devices can be useful where there is difficulty with the airway, at this point it would be reasonable to quickly inspect any obvious obstruction however, all of the reasonable steps above should be taken to inflate the lungs as a priority – there is no evidence to support routine tracheal suctioning.

The iGel should be lubricated with a small amount of water-based lubricant left in the bowl of the holding case.

Once the airways adjunct of choice is inserted: repeat the 5 inflation breaths.
